Back in the days, we used iron/steel pans and we still do.
The popular belief is that non stick pans kill the nutrient value in your food. The truth is that non stick pans are not safe.
Using teflon (which is found in non stick pans) is hazardous because it’s carcinogen. The coating of the non stick pans is made of polyvinyl chloride that is actually a plasticizer that can cause liver damage.
When heated, these coatings release fumes and cause cancer. Some non stick pans use PFOA, which is a carcinogen and another hazardous element but this is very rare.
Chefs Preferred Pans
A non-stick cookware is a cookware having a surface that makes food not to stick to it.
The most common non-stick cookware is a frying pan coated with a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) or simply known as a Teflon coating.
It has been found that the Teflon coating contains perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).
PFOA is a toxic chemical that is a carcinogen and can cause birth defects. PFOA is used to make a particular Teflon coating called but now its usage is minimized.
2. Other Better Types
Cast iron pans are the most popular type of pan being used by chefs. Cast iron pans are extremely durable and are even known to outlive their owners.
Cast iron is also by far the most versatile pan. It is useful for searing, sauteing, frying, baking, grilling, warming, or even serving.
This is due to the fact that cast iron transmits and retains heat well and is extremely durable.
Other types that chef uses are copper, or carbon steel pans.
3. It’s Not Just About Cooking Health Matter Too
It’s not just about the cooking part. When you use nonstick cookware, you’re not just cooking food, you’re also worsening the health.
So what’s the big deal about using non stick pans? Non stick pans use polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) as talked about before which is a synthetic polymer that has been linked to tumors and cancer in animals as well as humans.
When heated at high temperature, PTFE can emit fumes that may cause flu-like symptoms, depression and even death. But, all of this is very rare but possible.
